Enable SMB File Sharing on your Mac

If FileBrowser cannot connect to your Mac, macOS file sharing or SMB sharing may not be enabled.

This guide walks through the steps required to enable SMB file sharing on macOS so you can access your files from FileBrowser on iPhone and iPad.

Most setups only take a few minutes.

Before you begin

Check the following first:

  • Your Mac and iPhone or iPad are connected to the same network
  • Your Mac is awake and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  • You know your Mac username and password
  • FileBrowser has Local Network permission enabled in iOS Settings

If those are ready, continue with the setup below.

Turn on File Sharing in macOS

To enable network file sharing on your Mac:

  1. Open the System Settings app and click "General" then "Sharing"
  2. Ensure "File Sharing" is enabled, then click the info icon next to the switch.

  3. Click the "Options" button
  4. A dialog like the following one will appear
  5. Make sure that "Share files and folders using SMB" is enabled.
